Life expectancy in Australia is now over 83 years. But the years lived in good
health — what the World Health Organization calls healthy life expectancy — stop
several years earlier. The difference is time spent managing illness rather than living well.

~70 yrs
Healthy life expectancy — the years typically lived without significant illness or disability.
Preventative medicine aims to narrow that gap: to keep physical and cognitive function closer to
your chronological age for longer. The levers are unglamorous and well evidenced — sleep,
movement, what you eat and drink, how you recover from stress, and catching changes early.
Where early assessment helps
- Earlier signal. Metabolic, cardiovascular and hormonal changes often show in
measurements years before they show in symptoms.
- A baseline to compare against. One set of numbers is a snapshot; two sets are
a direction.
- Priorities, not a checklist. Knowing which pillar to work on first is worth
more than working on all five badly.
On the statistics. Figures quoted here are population averages from Australian
public health sources, including the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, the National
Health and Medical Research Council and the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.
Population averages describe groups, not individuals, and say nothing about your own health.
