Is an Infrared Sauna Better Than a Traditional Sauna?

Dr. Jeremy A Hunt Dr. Jeremy A Hunt | August 11, 2026 | 2 mins read

A traditional sauna heats the room, and the hot air heats you. An infrared cabin does not work that way. Infrared panels warm your body more directly, so the air around you stays cooler than it would in a traditional room.

That is the difference, and it shows up as a lower air temperature in the cabin. Ask us for the range on the cabin we use and for how long we suggest a first visit should be.

Some people prefer sitting in the cooler air. Others prefer the heat of a traditional room. It is a question of comfort, and neither is the better machine.

A session is straightforward: you sit in a warm cabin for a set time and you sweat. Bring water and drink it afterwards.

People book saunas for different reasons, and quiet and time alone are the two we hear most. We make no claims about what a session does, and the clinic does not offer it as a treatment for any condition. If a health problem is what brought you to the idea, talk to your doctor first.

Before you book either kind

The points below apply to traditional and infrared saunas alike.

  • Do not use a sauna after drinking, or while you are unwell or running a fever. Wait until that has passed.
  • You will sweat heavily, and you may feel lightheaded standing up. Get up slowly, sit down once you are out, drink water, and let your body cool before you do anything else.
  • Overheating and dehydration happen. Leave the cabin if you feel unwell at any point during a session.
  • Get clearance from your doctor first if you have any health condition, including high blood pressure or a heart condition, or if you are under medical care.
  • Tell us before booking if you are pregnant or might be, or if you have a pacemaker or another implanted cardiac device.
  • Some medications make people more sensitive to heat or light. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure about anything you take.
  • Saunas are not recommended for children.

Sauna use does not suit everyone.

If you have any health conditions such as high blood pressure, heart problems, or are under medical care, we advise you get cleared by your doctor before your first session.
